Epoxy Coating
Most people think only of concrete when considering an epoxy coating as that is the most common application. However, if you are wondering about other surfaces, continue reading to learn which can be done, which cannot, and those that have challenges involved. By understanding this information, you could save yourself from a disaster or find you can enjoy an epoxy coating when you thought you couldn’t.

  • All Concrete Surfaces – It is a common misconception that epoxy coating can be done on any concrete surface. The reality is that it isn’t recommended for rough, uneven concrete because the substrate will be too weak to handle the process. You’d end up with pinholes, bubbles, peeling, and other failures.
  • Wood – The problem with wood is that it is flexible, responding to conditions that make it expand and contract. This movement would cause the epoxy coating to crack and fail, making wood a surface that isn’t recommended. In addition, since wood contains humidity, pinholes and blistering would likely result.
  • Terrazzo – There are some inherent challenges involved with terrazzo that make it a more challenging surface to prepare for an epoxy coating. This could make it a costly process. First of all, care must be taken when grinding the terrazzo to remove any sealers on it and permit a good bond. Any cracks and pores should be filled, and a quality epoxy primer is needed.
  • Marble – Much like the challenges involved with terrazzo, to put an epoxy coating on marble, proper grinding must be completed to take off any polish or sealant and a primer that penetrates marble must be utilized.
  • Tile – You can put an epoxy coating on tile provided you remove the glossy surface and sealant on the tile and fill the grout lines, so they are on the same level as the tile. A textured tile will need to be smoothed by grinding.
